Sunflower Mug: handmade with white stoneware clay, thrown on pottery wheel. Original design drawn on pot and painted with underglaze.
A friend of mine asked if I would make her a sunflower mug, I had never really drawn them before so I did a lot of research and sketching and now I'm hooked on these flowers.
Each bloom is actually thousands of tiny flowers, the yellow petals and the brown centers are all individual flowers themselves - amazing! This mug is happiness. Fill it with your favorite hot drink and make it a great morning.
I get completely lost in the painting and love to make these mugs. I sketch out the design loosely in pencil, then start layering in the petals with underglaze in yellow, orange and brown. Next I slip trail a black outline to add some detail and dimension to each flower. The scratchy orange texture on the base is a nice contrasting pattern. The outside of the mug is dipped in a clear glaze, and the interior is a warm oatmeal glaze which compliments the warm color palette. And because I can't leave any blank surface alone, the bottom of the mug gets another flower with my signature :)
This mug is approximately 3.5"wide x 3.5"tall and holds 12oz of liquid
Glaze is food safe, ok to use in microwave or dishwasher. But to protect and maintain finish and surface decoration, hand washing is best.
